Downer EDI Works' Graduate Programs

At Downer EDI Works, we don't just hire graduates - we hire our future leaders. That's why our graduate program is designed to help you lay the foundations for a truly fulfilling career with us. For that reason, we enter all our graduates in our mentoring program where an experienced Works Infrastructure colleague will help you ‘learn the ropes’, assist with planning your career, and help resolve any issues that arise along the way.

Applications are invited from Bachelor of Engineering (Civil or Mechanical), Business and Science graduates and final year students, for graduate positions.

Works will help you to acquire the competencies necessary to succeed within our industry.

The aim of the Graduate Program is to provide you with hands on experience in a variety of fields and develop and retain the talented individuals who want to embark on a challenging career within the Company.

Graduate Programs vary between different regions. To find out more about your area click on the relevant region below:

Southern Region (Victoria, Tasmania & southern New South Wales)

Western Region (Western Australia) - Graduate Program

Emphasis on project management as opposed to design work
Good technical skills
Strong inter-personal skills, ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with client, sub-contractors, employees and peers
Prepared to learn all aspects of the business, road maintenance and construction, land subdivision and civil engineering projects
Prepared to travel and relocate to regional areas from time-to-time
Well organised, ability to handle multiple projects
Strong work ethic, ability to manage stress

Core civil contracting services include:

Road construction and maintenance contracts via ‘Main Roads Department’ covering Perth metropolitan areas and main regional roads north of Perth
Land subdivisions in Perth and in the Pilbara (Karratha, Port Hedland, and Newman)
Civil Engineering Projects in Perth and Regional WA including airstrips, harbours, mine site infrastructure and associated earthwork civil engineering.
The value of our projects can range from $100K to $20M

Eastern Region (Queensland and New South Wales) – Graduate Program

With infrastructure spending in Queensland reaching unprecedented record levels and the beautiful sunshine and beaches amongst the best in the world, why wouldn’t you want to work in Queensland, one of the fastest growing states in Australia. Downer EDI Works in Queensland is booming. With an aggressive expansion program well underway Downer EDI Works is well placed to capitalise on the booming economy.

New South Wales on the other hand offers an excellent array of different career opportunities. A mature market with a huge amount of product volume being produced on a daily basis, New South Wales offers the full gambit of road and rail infrastructure solutions. New South Wales also has a demonstrated track record in exceeding customer satisfaction at a number of major ports and airports. The scope is there for any ambitious employee to get some significant skills and experience that would look great on anyone’s resume.

Tailored Graduate Program

Upon commencement, graduates will have direct input into creating their own 2-3 year graduate development plan. The program will be tailored to the needs of each individual graduate. However graduates can be expected to spend a significant portion of time in the following areas:

Road Surfacing (including site preparation, planning of works, risk assessments, completing works, customer liaison, tender preparations and exposure to contractual control)
Safety, Quality & Environment
Assets, plant, production and laboratories
Spray Seal
Infrastructure Maintenance
Civil construction
Support Services (including Human Resources, Finance, Benchmarking teams)

For each rotation graduates will be assigned an experienced “mentor”, to provide assistance and guidance in the development of the graduate employee.
Graduates must have a “can do” attitude and are prepared to take calculated risks to pursue their own career development. Working with Works Infrastructure equips graduates with a broad range of practical experience that would be the envy of other graduates. The development opportunities are endless within the broader Works Infrastructure group.
